Season 4 Finale part 1 (of 3!)

May 15th, 2008 by Caryn

I thought it was weird that they'd plan 2 different days to air a single, THREE HOUR season finale. I remember when shows were only half an hour, and you'd be really excited to get a whole entire hour for the finale--this is just getting out of hand! But I'm not complaining. There are so many threads to follow this season, it makes complete sense to take an entire hour just to put all of the pieces in place. What'd you think?

Whoa moments

-Kate's mom didn't come to the reunion =(
-They're headed to the Orchid--finally, we get to learn more about this mysterious station!
-Faraday knows about the Orchid? How?
-It's Sawyer and Miles
-Kate takes Aaron from Sawyer--a foreshadowing of things to come?
-The island is named 'Membata'
-Press conference: rough crowd! All journalists aren't like that, I promise. =)
-NADIA!! The best reunion of them all...yay!
-Sun buys out her father! Talk about the ultimate payback; maybe Jin DID die, after all...
-Hurley's new car--THE NUMBERS!! And a rabbit's foot as the keychain
-The Orchid can move the island?
-None of the first raft group except Sun and Aaron make it off the island. What happens to them?
-Christian's funeral: CLAIRE'S MOTHER shows up. Jack finds out that he's Claire's brother...and that Aaron is his nephew
-The freighter is loaded with C4!!
-Richard Alpert and the Others catch Kate and Sayid. Why?
-So many cliff-hangers...SO not enough time!!

Quotables:

"We are in shock, Jack" -Sun
"Don't bleed to death, Jack" -Juliet
How to move the island? "Very carefully" - Ben
"Jesus Christ is not a weapon" -Hurley's mom
"How many times do i have to tell you, John? I always have a plan." - Ben

Lost in Hawaii locations:

HONOLULU AIRPORT!!
Where is the hangar of the press conference?
First Hawaiian Tower - Paik industries staircase
Hurley's mansion - Kahala?
Christian's funeral - which chapel?

There will be a break next week, and then a 2 hour final offering on the 29th. The suspense is already killing me...

    Lost Easter Eggs

The Six Land in Hawaii!! Yay! Favorite quote.....after the "why are you all so healthy looking" question: "Dude, was that question directed at me?" - Hurley

And I'm happy that finally, finally, Jack found out Claire was his half sister. Great Episode. Can't wait for the Final two hours. That is all for now.

  2. cruman87:

Christian's Funeral was at St. Patricks Church. I used to go to St. Patrick School. It's in Kaimuki.

  3. Kyle:

I suspect that thing strapped to Keamy's arm from the previous episode is tied into the C4 on the ship (hence the outgoing transmission from the ship). If anything happens to Keamy, the Kahana goes "BOOM!" That could explain the fate of the survivors who's made it on the ship, but not part of the Oceanic Six.

[...] that means "uncertainty." Tom Coombe.TV Watchers - http://blogs.mcall.com/tvwatchers/|||Season 4 Finale part 1 (of 3!)-The island is named ‘Membata’ -Press conference: rough crowd! All journalists aren’t like [...]

  5. chadepp:

Membata, Membata, Membata, Membata......I think "spam-lassie-bot" is trying to tell us something about the island of Membata!

  6. Bill:

    Hurley's mansion is in Kahala.

  7. Bill:

I suspect the freight will go boom. "Lost" seems to focus on one location with the Hawaii Film Studios facility (the first year was the old Xerox building). The first year it was the cave, the second year it was the hatch, the third year it was the Others' station. All these lasted one year, primarily.

I fear that the freighter going boom may eliminate interesting characters from the show.

Although I'm looking forward to the last episodes of the season, I'm also concerned that Lost may "jump the shark." In explaining how the Oceanic Six really got off the island and perhaps the fate of the others who were not part of the Oceanic Six, I wonder if Lost will lose too much of what brought loyalists to the show week after week.

  8. HOP 2008:

Kind of set up episode. I want to see how Ben gets even with Keamy. How the 6 actually got off the island is interesting, but it doesn't really build on the mythology of Lost and the island. I hope that there will be more than that in the last two hours.

  9. chawan_cut:

anyone else see the rabbit's foot the pilot was rubbing when they landed the 6?

freaky to see the #'s in the odometer.

do you think kate knows that claire is jack's sister? didn't seem like she heard claire's mom when she was talking to jack. and jack gave the look like, should i tell kate??? is that what's tearing him up too? is that why he wants to get back to the island? to find both his sister and his father?

you kinda knew that the "other" others would show up as reinforcements for ben. i see the jungle showdown i the season ender.

is it me, or did Jin learn english really fast. michael seemed surprised that he understood him.

although sounds like he really might be dead. i wonder who the 2nd person is that Sun is blaming for his death. i know the 6 of them swore secrecy about their survival, but i think in Sun's emotional retort against her father, that she was telling the truth about Jin.

and did you see c.s.lewis' face as physics boy left off on the dingy? from a timid, scared looking guy when we first met him, to the "hero" rescuer willing to get the people off the rock? maybe he realized what he's just done and is trying to make up for his wrongdoings just like michael.

i wonder why keamy/widmore would want to blow up the freighter. if this island is really remote. (membata is just the made up island that oceanic conjured up for their cover up story), then how would they ever get off of it and return to the real world. maybe there's a second boat out there.

gotta wonder how the oceanic six all get together to get off the island. right now they're all split up all over the place.

i'm thinking that what happens is that keamy folks won't succeed in torching the island. they will blow up the freighter however and now that sayid folks know the bearing to head to, that he somehow gets the 6 off the island. and locke does succeed in moving the island, as widmore doesn't know where it is anymore. ben and the others are still there on the new island, as he's still able to do his teleportation/stargate thing. (recall how sayid asked ben how he got off the island when he was confronted after the funeral??)

btw, Caryn, are we having a lost season ender party???

  10. homey ®:

At the press interview in the hanger, it was mentioned that Aaron is 5-weeks old.

That is one huge 5 week old baby!!!

    Or did I mishear?

  11. Caryn:

chadepp: haha, that was also one of my favorite quotes--totally forgot to include it. thanks!

I left one of the 'membata' spam comments because it tells us that 'membata' means uncertainty. A rather appropriate appellation for our fickle island, I must say.

Thanks to Bill and cruman87 for the locations--like I've said before, I'm a total country girl. Town locations are often beyond my powers of discernment.

Kyle & Bill: I think that you are absolutely right about the electronics strapped onto Keamy. He's going to blow the freighter! Only thing is, how will he get back to the real world at that point? Unless he never intended to leave the island once he got there...hmmm

  12. me:

the hanger is out at Barber's Point. I'm going there for work this morning

  13. chadepp:

chawan- the answer to your question that you asked me earlier: He said they took the boat, followed the bearing and it took him to an Island, they sold the boat, and hopped on a cargo boat back to the states.

  14. Caryn:

Wow, thanks for the novel, chawan! hehe. homey--I was thinking the SAME thing about Aaron. But hey--island babies are always "healthy," hahaha.

  15. Caryn:

Barber's Point!! I was totally going to guess that...but didn't want to be WAY off. haha, thanks, 'me'!

  16. geoff in hilo:

wasnt the church cathedral church on fort street mall?

  17. chawan_cut:

    caryn,
on the coast guard plane that carried the Oceanic 6, you could see the words Barber's Point on the nose as it landed. although i thought that base was shut down. maybe they got permission to use the landing strip for that shot. there's probably also a lot of unused hangars there as well.

  18. Bill:

Geoff in Hilo--no, it IS St Patrick's on WaialaeAvenue. You'll see in one of the earlier streams that someone mentioned seeing filming at St. Patrick's.

Maybe Keamy expects Widmore to send a rescue mission. But if Widmore loses track of where the island really is (because Locke moved it), Keamy would really be lost.

  19. tommui:

Thanks for your column the last two times!

I've been off-island and the Y*(()_)@# ship doesn't show Lost!

Hopefully my friend has it still on his recorder.

  20. wicked:

OK. This is kinda off topic, but please allow me... I was curious if LOST had a big following outside of the US. Well, lo and behold on http://www.mixi.jp (social network in Japan similar to US's facebook or myspace) there is a LOST community:

    http://mixi.jp/list_bbs.pl?id=656952&type=bbs

Of course you have to be able to read Japanese to view any of this. There's 13,015 subscribers. One person wrote in that when she was traveling on Oahu, she ran into "John Locke" while shopping at Vitamin World in Waikele. And she had a picture to prove it:

  21. lanihuli:

Barber's Point is home to the Coast Guard's Air Station in Hawai'i. They have C-130's and HH65C's rescue helicopters there. The hangar is there. I don't like the thought of all that C4 going 'boom' and am hoping that everyone who made it to the boat got to go somewhere else and the 6 were sworn to secrecy about their location.

  22. cw:

oh-- location questions already got answered. but i was going to tell you caryn, i'm surprised you're not subscribed to this blog yet. he always posts locations and photos like the day of shooting or right after.

    http://www.hawaiiweblog.com/

  23. H20:

Here's my question. Since we're probably going to end with the "current" island time and flashforwards both ending with the same thing, most likely the rescue, where does next season start? We've already seen way after the oceanic 6 are rescued. So do we start at the end of last season with a bearded Jack telling Kate they need to go back? That would be weird picking up next season where we ended last season.

  24. GumbysHorse:

ok maybe i totally missed some things but...how do we know for sure that the c4 on the boat is keamy/widmores doing?? didnt ben send michael on the boat to blow it up originally?? maybe michael planted the explosives...but then again that would not explain the crazy ipod that keamy is wearing on his arm...one thing is for sure, this season's finale was probably be the most cliff-hangerish of all

  25. Kyle:

I just thought of something...if the island won't let Michael die (his and Keamy's failed attempts), then as long as he remains on the freighter with the C4 it shouldn't blow.

I also think the C4 is Keamy's and that he's prepared to be stranded on the island or die. After all, he is a mercenary. Then again, Widmore could have given Keamy additional information about the island that would explain how Ben and the Others seem to effortlessly travel to and from the island.

  26. Caryn:

    hmm...good thoughts, everyone!
cw: I DO know about that blog, and I've referenced it a few times, but I really enjoy trying to 'figure out' where scenes were shot--even though I'm pretty bad at it!--so I don't visit too often. =)

H20: I have given up asking questions like that...we'll just see where the writers take us next!

GumbysHorse: I'm pretty sure the C4 can't be Michael's because all he carried onto the boat when he boarded in Fiji was a backpack and the box holding a small amount of explosives that wouldn't explode because he can't die! It has to be Keamy's, triggered by the electronics strapped to his upper arm.

Kyle: That is a great thought--and makes me hope that Michael does NOT leave that boat for any reason in the finale!!

  27. Willy:

One thought I had earlier about Sun. What was the deal with Sun and Hurley hooking up after the birth of Sun's baby?

I saw the Hoff's/Drawler funeral parlor sign as of a week ago on Liliha (next to that Japanese restaurant near L&L) and a half ago but then they took down the signs and all I see are the commercial realtor signs for sale or rent. Darn, I wanted to take a pic and see what all the words said.

How did Charlotte, Daniel and Lapidus get off the island? Weren't they crying (well, at least Daniel and Lapidus) when they saw the footage of Oceanic 815?

Can't wait for the finale but it sucks that the season is over. Oh well.

  28. Bill:

There's nothing that says Michael can't die...he just can't die until he finishes the mission given to him by the island. Having accomplished that mission, whatever it is, Michael can die.

  29. jp:

hurley's mansion is in kahala pretty much at the intersection of farmers and kolohala. they've filmed there a bunch of times in the past few years.
