Shell-shocked

May 30th, 2008 by Caryn

Do NOT read on if you have yet to see the finale–it’s worth watching EVERY ‘whoa’ moment unspoiled!

Honestly? My list of ‘whoa’ moments is about 2 miles long, or roughly one ‘whoa’ moment for every other moment of the entire 2 hours of tonight’s finale. Not to mention that ‘whoa’ just doesn’t cut it. It should really be ‘WHOA!!’

(btw, in case you were wondering, the Kahuku graduation was awesome. :) Congrats to my brother, Evan, for a job well done. How was the party? Inquiring minds–ok, just mine–would like to know.)

Anyway, the point is that I’m not even going to attempt to write out an entire list of ‘whoa’ moments for this episode. Instead, I think a list of the most interesting things we’re going to deal with next season will give us more to chew on:

-The return of Walt. Does he have to go back to the island with all of them, too?
-Was the island moved in TIME, SPACE, or BOTH? And more importantly, where is it now?
-Ben: good guy or bad guy? He ‘always has a plan,’ and yet still lost it (or did he?) when he killed Keamy and sentenced all the freighter folk–not to mention Jin (NOOO!) and Michael–to death by C4. And then immediately chooses to banish himself from the island forever. What?!
-Where WAS Charlotte born, and why are she and Miles so eager to remain on that island?
-Sawyer finally has his true hero moment when he jumps out of the chopper. What role will he play on the newly relocated island (wherever/whenever it is)?
-What about Desmond and Lapidus? Do they, too, have to return with the Oceanic 6 + Locke’s cadaver?
-We still need to learn more about Widmore. And Sun’s ruthless new game to seek vengeance for Jin’s death.
-What ever happened to Faraday and his 5 zodiac passengers?
-Why does Claire ask Kate NOT to bring Aaron back to the island?
-And my final question: WHY DID LOCKE LEAVE THE ISLAND?

For me, it was a night of ‘hero’ moments. Not only do the major characters sacrifice themselves in big ways–Sawyer, Sayid (how AWESOME was his fight with Keamy?), Jack, Kate, Ben, Jin, Michael–but the less-dominant forces in the finale really saved the day. Faraday and Juliet saved the beach folk, Lapidus came through for the Oceanic 6, the Others took out Keamy’s team, and Penny followed Desmond’s signal. If it wasn’t 1 a.m., I would cheer that those two are finally reunited!

Here’s my take: the show’s ‘present’ has finally connected with the future. This means that next season, we are going to have to go into a new mode of storytelling. I’m not sure how it’ll play out, but the old method of flashforwards and flashbacks just isn’t going to cut it anymore. Not to mention, we are going to HAVE to find out where and when that island went! What do you think? Time to digest and theorize!

All I know is that we’ve come a long way since season 1, when the Losties fell out of the sky. 2 more seasons to go!

  1. Elke:

Here are my thoughts regarding the moments you listed:

-Walt: they were able to play it nicely into the show that he is older now. We know given Kate’s comment to Jack that they are 3 years into the future (after they left the island). I think that he will also need to return to them, that’s why “Jeremy” visited him.
-The island has for sure moved in space, and I do think possibly time. If you recall to the episode earlier in the season where Ben plays super warrior with the guys in the desert he asked the woman at the desk of the hotel what year it was.
-Ben is a good guy and a bad guy, it just depends on who you are and what he wants and we know he will do ANYTHING to protect the island, even apparently banishing himself.
-As for Charlotte she must have been born on the island. She implied it so I’m going to assume that’s why. I have no idea why Miles would want to stay except for the supernatural properties. Maybe he knows why Charlotte wants to stay and that’s why he’s staying.
-Sawyer has always been a hero :) I don’t think he ever really wanted to be a bad guy, but was so hurt by the conditions surrounding his parents, he let the grief consume him. Now that he offed the real “Sawyer” he’s vindicated and can be the good guy. He also really loves Kate and would apparently do anything to save her. My biggest lament about him staying on the island is that I do not want him to hook up with Juliet but it wouldn’t surprise me if that happens. As for him coming out of the ocean dripping wet and shirtless, *YUM*.
-I think we will see more of Desmond and possibly Frank. Not sure what to think about Frank’s future, but since Desmond has a personal tie to Whidmore we’ll see him again. I was happy that Desmond and Penny finally found each other :D
-Sun has something up her sleeve, I’m curious to learn her motives. It will be interesting to see that play out. I was beside myself when I saw Jin blow up, that made me very sad :(
-Will be interesting to see what happens to Faraday. I’m going to assume they made it back to the island before it moved. He had a sense of foreboding though, he knew he wasn’t coming back to the island which is why he told Charlotte and Miles to come with him, so we’ll have to see.
-As was stated, bad things happened on the island after everyone left. I’m going to assume it’s not safe for Aaron to go back, but we also don’t really know why. I’m also assuming that Claire is dead since she’s been hanging with Christian.
-Locke left the island to come get the 6 who got off. He needs them to come back together and he was coming to convince them to come back. I’m upset that he died, but it didn’t shock me that it was him in the casket.
Can’t wait for next season, it’s going to be a long 8 months or so :( Will have to go back and rewatch this season and learn more.

  2. chadepp:

Wow…what a finale! That was great. Lot’s of stuff to think about, but one thing that caught me, was the Octagon Global commercial. At first I thought….”what the Hell is this?” Then come to find out, it’s this: Octagon Global Recruiting

Check it out. That is it for now.

  3. Ray:

I can’t belive that not one person that I work with watches the show! What a ride last night was.

  4. chadepp:

Did a quick search of “Jeremy Bentham” on google and here’s what I found:
    Jeremy Bentham
And for a definition of Utilitarianism go here: Utilitarianism

Notice the part about “…the ends justify the means…”

  5. chadepp:

    oops…here Utilitarianism

  6. theidiotsage:

Did anyone else notice that Sun’s baby looked like it might be Michael’s? and she just had to tell him that she was pregnant in some awkward moment?

  7. BananaFish:

I’m just glad I could watch it online after my cable went out, right at the end of last night’s episode.

Locke in the coffin! Whoa! How’d he get off?

I read a theory somewhere that the island is actually Atlantis. hmmm… Is the 4 toed statue Atlantean in origin?

If the island can just move like that, it explains how the Black Rock got stuck in the middle of the island. I’m assuming the island can just reappear someplace else.

I’m like Ray - my co-workers don’t watch Lost. :( Good thing get this blog to talk story and read cool theories. :D

  8. jojo ®:

I wonder what the significance of Christian appearing to Michael was. Did that mean Christian is now the new leader and not Jacob? And by telling Michael he can go now, that Michael is officially “dead?” Was Michael a fake dead, hence the reason why he couldn’t die?

I’m glad Penny and Desmond found each other. I was afraid that the boat was the “Others,” at first.

Oh, did anyone watch the alternate endings that were on Good Morning America? Are they available online somewhere?

  9. HOP 2008:

Did you notice that they paid homage to the first 3 season ending scenes? Season 1 with the boat and raft scene was similar to the others boat and raft scene. Season 2 with the moving of the island was kind of like when the clock hit 00:00 and they actually replayed the Season 3 final scene.

All in all a great season although they are basically at the same point of the story when the season began (We gotta get back to the island). This season caught us up with how we got to the flash forwards from last seasons finale.

Now we can look forward to see how this will all play out - I think next season will take the 6 back to the island and the last season will deal with the final resolution of the islands fate.

  10. Willy:

    That was an amazing episode.

Thanks for noting the awkward moment between Michael and Sun. I do remember thinking that when Sun was showing Hurley her baby in a previous ep., the baby looked dark with curly hair. I thought maybe it was still Jin’s because Jin is pretty dark. But I distinctly remember thinking to myself that the baby looks black. It must be Michael’s baby. Weird; when did they share a moment?

Saw the Hoffs-Drawler funeral parlor again and the Liliha Barber Shop across the street in yesterday’s ep. I live near there and the signs were still up as of mid May, but now the signs are down and the commercial real estate signs are up. Too bad — sounds like no more scenes there.

Locke looked creepy in that suit and in the casket. And he visited Walt, Jack and Kate. Is Locke evil? Locke kept saying that he isn’t Ben, as if to say Ben is the one that is evil. Now has Locke’s newfound authority made him go into a moral abyss like Colonel Kurtz in The Heart of Darkness?

So is Penny Widmore in on the lie to keep the truth from Charles Widmore and his cronies? So basically she is willing to lie to his dad? Why does Widmore want to kill all of the Flight 815 passengers who made it to the island? So he can keep this secret to himself and hoard the powers of the island?

What’s Sun and Charles Widmore’s common goal, to bring down Ben? I wonder why Sun thinks that the 2nd person to kill Jin was Jack, not Ben or anyone else.

Why was Membata 3,000 miles away? I thought Membata near Fiji and isn’t that near where Flight 815 crashed?

    Very compelling stuff!

  11. Willy:

Oh, one more thing. I wonder if Locke changed his name from John Locke (the philsopher who thought man was inherently good, but just needed checks and balances) to Jeremy Benthan (the ulilitarian who basically says ends justify the means, do a cost/benefit analysis as your morality)?

  12. Willy:

Ah, sorry - I cannot edit my post. What I meant to say was maybe Locke changed his name to Bentham b/c he changed his philsophy and maybe Richard Alpert convinced him to change it.

Is Richard Alpert the other guy who leads - Ben referred to someone else making the decision to kill the Dharma people.

Also, did I not see Horace and his wife doing some work when Locke first finds the others after coming out of The Orchid?

Sorry for all these posts. Thanks!

  13. HawaiiBlog:

Woah is right that was one season finale filled with excitement, happiness and sadness. Without recapping since Caryn did such a great job…

I think the first arc of next season will have to link back to what is happening on the island and show us why Locke left the island to try to get the Oceanic 6 back.

I’m guessing the middle of the season will focus on the Oceanic 6 (and maybe Locke/Walt etc) returning to the island. I wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of next season everybody is back on the island.

    As for the people

Jin I’m guessing is dead as gut wrenching as it was.

Michael I don’t think his story is done and I don’t think the island let him die. I would be surprised if he doesn’t show up.

Faraday and people on the zodiac I’m going to have to say I don’t think they made it back to the island.. whether the island brings them back to the new location or not I don’t know. If the helicopter couldn’t fly back to the island after the ship blew up I don’t think the zodiac could have made it back either.

Desmond/Penny I don’t think their story is done either I’m guessing they will have to take a side either for or against her dad.

Locke no way he is going to remain dead. I think it is part of the ploy to get people back to the island. I’m also wondering if the alternate endings show other people in the coffin guess I will have to wait to watch my recording of the morning show.

I liked best how the episode linked many of the story lines we have seen before with a lot of gottcha moments. Well done the only problem now is waiting until next season to see what happens…

    ..eDave..

  14. Caryn:

What was most satisfying for me was that most of the dangling storylines we’ve been dealing with this season (since last season!), were answered. The big questions for next season, in my mind, can wait for next season. It was the perfect balance between wrapping everything up and keeping my interest high for season 5.

(Can you believe we’ve been watching for FIVE years now?)

  15. Caryn:

Btw I LOVE the idea that the island is Atlantis. I am going to refer to it as such from now on–thanks, BananaFish!

  16. BananaFish:

Hm, forgot about that little moment between Sun and Michael. That was odd.

I seem to recall him seeing her topless in season 1? He was running through the jungle, and she was bathing or something. Maybe then?!?

Oh boy, can’t wait for next season! So many questions still unanswered!

  17. Caryn:

You know, parent-child relationships are extremely important in Lost. Reflect on the lives of just about every major character, and you’ll see what I mean.

And so it’s not surprising that there is something strange (significant?) about babies/birth/children in this show. I bring this up because the only 2 children known to be born on the island are Alex and Aaron–all other fetuses (ie conceived on-island) die, along with their mothers. But Charlotte could possibly be a third island-born child. Was her mother brought to the island post-conception, or is she one of the island’s ‘miracles’?

Just one of the many compelling questions I expect to have answered next season…

  18. H20:

I don’t mind the Atlantis theory but after 4 seasons they’d really have to cram that explanation down our throats in 2 shortened season. The statue and the island moving are the only 2 things I can come up with that would support that. I really hope it’s something that we can go back and watch the whole series again and everything makes sense. So far, if it were Atlantis, much of what we’ve already seen wouldn’t mean a thing.

  19. jojo ®:

You know how Richard never ages, maybe Charlotte is like that. But that’s just a thought.

Also, when they panned down onto the other’s camp, I didn’t see any of the kids that were from the tail end that got kidnapped. Or even Cindy. Did anyone see them and I just missed it completely?

  20. lanihuli:

I’m still trying to absorb everything as I was “whoa out” but am glad that Desmond and Penny finally got back together.

  21. chawan_cut:

    my quick thoughts.
-since ben said that all of the Oceanic 6 will have to go back to the island, does that mean Sun’s kid too? along with aaron? i need to go look at the baby to see if its got Michael traits to it.
-Sun looks like a woman possessed with revenge. ben is rounding up all of them to go back. will she be widmore’s mole in spite and lead more keamy’s back to the new location? although ben has plans to find it, he doesn’t seem too confident.
-i think michael is goners. the island no longer needs him. and nice way to bring walt back into the picture. sad how no one went to visit him. although maybe they didn’t know he was alive. only sun & desmond really knew how kevin johnson & son got to the real world. and now sun is an angry woman and desmond is in hiding. the others didn’t hear that story.
-the claire sighting was kinda spooky. how can they return without aaron? is she mad at kate for pretending to be his mom?
-now how can you not know you shot keamy in the back and not kill him? it was obvious he was wearing a bullet proof vest. shoot him in the head! although that would’ve blown up the rescue boat sooner.
-lots of gratuitous flesh scenes for both the men and women.
-anyone know where the harbor was where the 6’s raft ended up?
-does jack now believe in the island? he said he didn’t believe in miracles to john, yet the island flux capacitor’d right in front of his eyes. it was funny how everyone on the copter was like, “are you serious???” i think jack’s in more of a struggle now between the science and faith part of him.
-did ben end up in tunisia right after turning the big switch? didn’t it seem like it was a similar big EMI pulse to the one that brought down flight 815 to begin with? and why was it cold down there in the ice cavern? it looks like the secret cave was supposed to be there, as there were the ladders.
-was the island moved previously? if ben ended up in tunisia after the move, did the polar bear also travel the same way? but if so, why was the orchid station still intact this time? if it was moved before, you would think there’d already be a hole in the teleport room.
-how did locke get off the island? did he move the island one more time? or did alpert tell him more secrets? ok, i answered my own question there. there has to be another teleportation device off the island. ben and richard and the others went to and fro easily before. the bowfin sub was a farce.
-who killed jeremy locke? was it widmore? you would think he’d want him alive to find out where the island was now.
-but then again, would locke, the others and remaining losties know where they ended up? they don’t have gps or a google earth to say, hey, we popped up here in the indian ocean!
-i was also happy to see desmond and penny get back together. that was a teary moment. (shut up, you know you did too). but now that desmond said he’ll never leave her side, will he become the enemy? penny and papa widmore don’t get along. and ben said he’d go after penny, and now since sayid is working for ben as the hitman, will sayid and desmond have a face off? what will happen?
-what did sawyer say to kate before he jumped? is that why she’s so secretive in the future from jack? is she fulfilling her promise to him?
-what do ghostbuster & dino-girl want with the island? seems like princess caspian was born there. i think myles likes talking to dead people. so many stories to hear. wait till he finds the dharma pit.
-and what’s up with physics boy? i think jin is still alive. he was on the aft end of the boat. he probably got blasted off the helipad and into the ocean. he probably got picked up by the dingy. you’d think they’d continue to head in the direction of the boat to see what happened. although its been 3 years, and no one has heard from them. maybe widmore captured them and has them secretly trying to figure out the new location of the island.

ok, that wasn’t very quick. i wrote too much again. maybe i’ll watch the replay tonight and write more later.

  22. Willy:

    Why does Richard wear eye-liner?

What was the meaning of Ben throwing all that metal into the teleporter?

Why was Juliet in no hurry to leave the island?

  23. chawan_cut:

    willy,
good point about Juliet. I think she had some sort of foreshadowing of what was happening. She was so ready to get off the island it hurt. I think when she found out they weren’t there to help she changed her mind.
Also, doesn’t Richard look like he has that alien “black eyeball” disease from X-files?? or maybe that’s my TV’s bad contrast…

  24. chawan_cut:

    oh yeah
does Walt have to go back to the island too?

  25. BananaFish:

    LOL!

I noticed Richard’s eye liner too! I was all “Wassup wit dat!?!

Maybe he has a side gig in some Emo band.

Whoa moment, just now, looking at chawan_cut’s list ;)

Nah, those are a lot of great thoughts. You hit a lot of the points I was thinking while watching as well.

I wonder if they kept a polar bear in the “switch room” cause it was cold down there, and maybe the bear turned the wheel? Is that how the bear skeleton wound up in Tunisia as well? Is Tunisia the antipode of the island?

  26. jojo ®:

In the video that Locke was watching, they explained that the island had a mysterious magnetic field thingee that allows teleportation. That vault that Ben was throwing stuff into was what Dharma had built to utilize this energy. But the island’s original energy was deep below the vault, and in order to get to that spot, Ben had to blow up the vault to make a hole to get there. Or so I think.

  27. Punaluu:

Enjoyed reading all your theories and comments. I don’t dwell too much on theories, just sit back and enjoy the show. Although I was surprised at first that they killed off Jin, later I remembered he got a DUI and had to laugh about it. It seems the like the producers have decided to kill off any cast member who gets a DUI. I hope Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lily never drive drunk!!

  28. Adam:

Matthew Fox has gained some considerable weight. He looks like me now:)

  29. Caryn:

I thought of putting the metal in the teleporter chamber as similar to putting a fork in the microwave. Back in high school, one of my friends tried to reheat some food in the microwave straight out of a metal pot. She literally blew a hole through the microwave door.

  30. Kyle:

Did anyone see the alternate endings to the season finale (shown on Good Morning America the next morning)? I think the producers decided to do that because the previous season’s finale was spoiled early (the leak about the flash forwards). Here’s a hint…the only change was the person in the coffin. It’s up on YouTube.

Speaking of YouTube, you can also find out what Sawyer whispered to Kate before jumping out of the helicopter. It definitely plays into Jack and Kate’s ruined engagement.

Also, if you want a good read, Popular Mechanics has some interesting articles on their website regarding the science in the show. So, if you thought moving the island was impossible, guess again. You can go to their website and do a search for Lost.

  31. chawan_cut:

    http://losteastereggs.blogspot.com/
here’s another good site with lots of screen caps and the audio.

  32. chawan_cut:

that was meant to say the audio captures. there’s pages and pages of pictures.

  33. Willy:

When do they start shooting again for season 6? Maybe I’ll just go by Toys N Joys every week and see if they have another giant panda.

  34. dakine madness:

are you kidding. you actually write about this crap? get a live. maybe let that beautiful hair of your down and do a little personal getting to know someone.. get laid! it’ll do you a world of good. especially after this crap
