Odds and ends

June 3rd, 2008 by Caryn

In case you didn’t notice, there is some ‘Lost’ related breaking news up on The Advertiser’s homepage.

Glad to see that the ‘tidal wave’ of ‘terror’ will be contained for the next few years.

Other interesting tidbits:

-Harold Perrineau (Michael) isn’t too happy with his character’s sudden and explosive demise.

-If you haven’t yet, watch the alternate endings. I think Locke was the best, most intriguing choice for ‘the body in the coffin’.

-Also, I forgot to post Doc’s analysis on the season finale. As always, it’s full of wild ideas and unexpected tidbits.

  1. HOP 2008:

Now all the reviews and recaps and theories have been thrown out there. I have surmised the following:

It was creepy to hear the backward message on Kate’s phone on the podcasts, but what is it with backwards messages? How is Kate supposed to figure that out?

Claire is dead? Debatable, no real sign that she actually kicked the bucket

Jin may even be alive, as he already has experience of jumping off floating craft that is exploding (end of season 1). And Daniel could be somewhere around with his raft…

…but Michael seems to be gone for good, Christian was there to give him closure…maybe.

This is going to be a long wait again. Next Feb! The thing is this time is that there is almost nothing interesting on TV now because of the writers strike. We’ll get a lot of the three Ds - Dancing, Dating and Dieting shows.

Good work as always and look forward to reading your blog in the future. And now, it’s officially Lost hibernation time. What to do? Maybe a good time to read up on some books…Maybe some 17th Century English Philosophers and Dickens!

  2. H20:

I’m keeping hope that Jin is alive. Where he was he could have easily been blown off the boat and into the water, and could be picked up by the people on the raft.

As far as Kate’s phone message, I don’t think she’s meant to figure it out the same way we do. I take it as being she just knows what it means, signs to go back to the island that she’s going to try to ignore and fight. What I don’t get is why Claire wouldn’t want Aaron to go back. If Christian Sheppard and Claire are now on the same page (Dead? who knows), and their whole purpose, along with Ben/Locke/Jacob/Richard, is to protect the island as the special place it is, why wouldn’t she want her son to be there?

  3. HOP 2008:

I was thinking about this…Why did Kate take Aaron on the boat to be with the Oceanic 6? Nobody in the outside world knew about him and nobody would have to have known about his existence. Also, Kate would not have to have explained the backstory. Anybody have any ideas?

  4. Willy:

Well, who would Kate have given Aaron to? Desmond - doesn’t know Claire very well. Lapidus or Penny — neither even met Claire. I don’t think Kate in good conscience could do that to Claire.

  5. ErgoIAM:

In response to Harold Perrineau’s interview, his comments really have no bearing on the direction of the show, since he’s in for a multi-year deal; and dead does not mean dead on Lost

I believe his opinion of the social implications of his character’s legacy is a valid one. His character has been one big stereotype from the beginning. Perrineau should have realized he was treading on landmines back in Season One after the scene in which he was attacked on the beach by Jin and the whole “his people (Koreans) don’t like my people (African-Americans)” dialogue. It’s then revealed that he wasn’t involved in the upbringing of his child, he spends most of his time angry, and the next season ends with him gunning people down. Towards the end, we see Michael pushing a broom, then in handcuffs. His big finale is the pronouncement of his ultimate role of a servant after being summarily dismissed with a “you can go now,” by The Man, Christian Shephard. Perrineau’s been “Bamboozled.” Were I him, I’d also be mad with the writers. In fact, he was really diplomatic about it, likely knowing it’s unwise for him to burn any bridges.

  6. ErgoIAM:

Desmond and Penny wouldn’t be able to take Aaron. Aaron’s cover would be blown every time Desmond called him “brotha” instead of son.

Seriously, though, there’s no record of Aaron’s birth, and he doesn’t look Korean, so Kate claiming him is the best option. A bigger question is what did Aaron eat after his mommy left. He was on the island for about two days and on Penny’s boat, then set adrift for about a week. Was there a hidden supply of Dharma Initiative Baby Formula or did Sun start lactating early?

  7. Willy:

Aaron was only on the island for two days?

  8. Willy:

Funny about Desmond calling Aaron “brutha.” Desmond should go into WWF or whatever they call it these days. He could be called “Scottish Desi” and could wear the quilt like Roddy Piper. Des is the man. I actually really thought he did a superb job in The Book of John, where he played Jesus.

  9. Willy:

Regarding the alternate endings and Jeremy Bentham — does this kind of thing show that the LOST producers are making stuff up as they go, or were they just throwing LOST viewers a bone and really intended for Locke to be Bentham all along? I agree with someone that Desmond in the casket makes no sense at all, nor is it intriguing. Maybe Sawyer being in there has some significance. But with Jeremy Bentham and John Locke having such big names in the philisophical world, Locke being in there made the most sense. Does the actor who plays Locke — does he have that scar/cut under his eye or is that for effect for the show? Anyway, that scar makes for a kind of evil effect - some kind of evil joker/clown.

  10. Caryn:

I read somewhere that the alternate endings were shot to foil potential spoiler leaks that could have ruined the surprise for everyone. I agree, though–Locke makes the absolute most sense of the three, and while potential spoilers could speculate the same thing, we all know that with this show you just never know. I thought it was a pretty clever (if rather expensive) tactic to keep everyone guessing until the last second.

  11. H20:

I’m currently going back and watching season 1. I never did see all of it and mostly got caught up with the recap show they had to start the second season. I just finished the second disk. I just finished the one where Charlie helping to save Jack in the cave and Charlies start of his drug problem with his band/brother. Then the one where Shannon needs her inhailer medication and everyone thinks Sawyer has it so Sayid tortures him and he gets Kate to kiss him only to find out that he doesn’t have it. Sawyer is the man. In one of the last 2 I saw is also where we find out about the letter Sawyer carries that he wrote when he was little and that he’s looking for the real “Sawyer” and the whole con-man flashback he had. Back to the torturing, it was funny to hear Sawyer tell Sayid something like “I bet you’ve never tortured anyone i your lfe” and Sayid says, “sadly, you are wrong”. Even we didn’t know how wrong he was yet.

And all I have to say is, anyone who says we never get any answers should go back and watch even the first couple episodes and tell me we don’t know so much more then we knew back then.

It is not good news. I hope Jin is alive. You did a great job to send this photo on this site. I hope Jin will come to her home soon.
